intimacy (2024)

I am interested in the nature of relationships and how they change we we get older. Intimacy, while universally craved, is often lost in adult friendships. Before hitting a certain age, it comes more easily. There is less self consciousness about touch. It comes casually and is shared often.

Suddenly we grow up, and it begins to mean something different. When looking at the media, intimacy is valuable only when sexual, and the two become inseparable. We crave touch in a different way. We want to be desired rather than just liked. It becomes a constant battle to achieve this level of intimacy, while it often never lives up to the expectations.

As I come to terms with this, I have found myself beginning to appreciate touch in a new way. More important than being desired is being known. To me, these photographs show that I am known, I am loved, and life is important even if not always grand.
